DENY THE URGE
"Black Box Of Human Sorrow"
[G.U.C Records]

Hailing from Braunshwieg in germany and consisting of Olaf Danneberg on Guitar, Kai Ludwig on drums, Henrik Osterloh on guitar & vocals, and Sven Nothdurft on bass [ As well as classical accompanyment from Felix Gutgesell, Daniel Jerzewski & Henning Bundies on Violin, Viola and cello] DENY THE URGE are a Melodic and Technical Death Metal band who have released their new album, the majestically entitled "Black Box Of Human Sorrow" through G.U.C Records [German Underground Collection]

What will first strike your fancy as it did mine is the classical intro by the name of "Preludium" which starts of proceedings with a real touch of class and finesse before rampaging blindly into the brutality of "Isolation". Vocally Henrik Osterloh is powerful and harsh, everything a Death Metal vocalist needs to be, and musically the band flow well whilst continually dabbling with pure ferocity as their repetoire explodes out of your stereo into your unsuspecting ears. "Open The Gates" marks the start of the Deny The Urge's more catchier riff-age which flows even faster and harder but melds to together using some awesome intricate solo play and a sporadic and well executed drumming style. far from catchy though "Challenge Yourself" puts a real shine on this bands heavy and sinister urges and the brutality just bellows all the way to the rafters.

"Material God" brings back the catchiness but stays true to the heavy sound that the band are now good for. It's a real head banging track throughout and leads dynamically into "The Veiling" which once again brings back in the classical talents of violin, viola and my favorite, cello. This is a wonderful interlude and a wonderful idea, keeping the album fresh but also adding a really sorrowful and sombre side to what is a very brutal band. Alot of work has blatently gone into the making of this album and I adore the thought processes that lay behind it, but don't adapt too much to this lighter side as "Father Of All" snaps you right back to a brutal reality with what is probably the track of the album, supreme guitar play combines with the bass and drums superbly to provide on the more easy on the ear songs whilst at the same time rolling off some seriously vitriolic material.

"The Legacy Of War" has a more modern sounding feel to it in places but also very Scandinavian also whilst "All Of Your Creation" is a direct into your face mindfuck of a track, blistering in it's pace and it's unleashed fury. Quite amusingly though tack number ten is another short classical piece caled "Intro" which leads into the grand finale of "The Mask Itself" which utilises everything that is great about Deny The Urge" and spits it right back out of you in a hail of hatred and unrelenting heavy Death Metal that is hell bent on destruction. This is a warning, do not take this band and album lightly. Deny The Urge have produced something quite special here and the classical interludes do it real justice, I just can't wait for the bands next installment.
