JOB FOR A COWBOY

w/ The Black Dahlia Murder

& The Red Chord

@ The Sheffield Corporation

Thursday 13th December 2007

There are those who say, and I count myself amongst them, that the test of a truly great live band is not how you perform in front of a massive and active crowd, but how you turn it round when the fans on hand to see your set is way below par. Tonight inside a moderately full Corporation the usual emo collective have gathered to stand about, compare slanty hair styles and not react in way shape or form to the bands showing their wares on stage. Only a few true metalheads have accumulated to view the spectacle before them, the Job For A Cowboy tour marking the 25th anniversary of Metal Blade Records

First up on stage though to show that an average crowd means nothing is The Red Chord, whose technical yet grinding sound is quickly washing over the audience in powerful droves. Most striking about tonight's performance though is the confident stage presence of the entire band and the endearing audience participation banter from front man Guy Kozowyk! Finishing with the stunningly heavy title track from their latest album "Prey For Eyes", The Red Chord win over many in the lacklustre audience and open up the show superbly. DDDDD

The Black Dahlia Murder however are a different kettle of fish entirely. With a crowd suitable warmed up by the previous band The Black Dahlia Murder start a forty five minute precession of sheer noise and aggression that inspired one or two circle pits and allot of flailing arms. With good crowd interaction and blisteringly fast tunes, The Black Dahlia Murder prove that the brutality on their latest release "Nocturnal" isn't just a studio thing, its a way of life! DDDD

Still mediocre, and lacking any excitement, the crowd welcome tonight's headliners Job For A Cowboy kick in to their savagely heavy style of straight up Death Metal without remorse or pity for those not ready for the relentless aggression they release upon the gawping crowd. Shredding through an enticing set the crowd warms miraculously and finally an atmosphere builds for this superb and professional band. Job For A Cowboy's crowd interaction is first rate and they end the set to loud cheers and pumping fists. DDDD

Tonight has been a game of two halves if you excuse the pun. Once again Sheffield has proven that it just doesn't get excited about anything anymore, but The Red Chord, The Black Dahlia Murder & Job For A Cowboy have put on a display that would wow any other crowd!
